March 2004
"The government has “welcomed the opportunity to explore fully the promising idea” of a bank that would deliver services to voluntary organizations. Over the past year, work on this innovative strategy has been led by a group of individuals and organizations from the voluntary sector, banking industry and private foundations, among others. The bank, which itself would be a charity, would deliver services only to the non-profit / charitable sector. Any profits would be re-invested in the sector. This is an exciting idea that has the potential to address some of the financing challenges that have now been well documented by several VSI-related studies. The Budget did not announce funding for the Bank. However, mention of it in the Budget signals a strong interest by the government in its development."
